I cannot believe that I hadn't remembered it earlier! Why not add self exploding ants! I've seen them in the advertisement for the kickstarter version and they are amazing!
I know what ant we could add to the formacarium!

This is unlikely to make it into the game (but as always, never say never) - it was a fun idea back when we were developing for mobile, but given we now have a story-driven campaign the exploding carpenter ants are unlikely to find a place.

What about in some future mission on an insane difficulty - work them in as an enemy that additionally harass you
