We're getting there with the new fire ant bridge system! A bridge can be assembled and disassembled quickly, allowing the fire ants to access resources and territory that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Ants create a floating raft of their own bodies which their brood-mates can traverse with ease. With this WIP video you can see we've made bridge building faster and allowed them to be disassembled when finished with.
The ants are light enough to exploit the surface tension of water - that combined with rafting instincts makes fire ants (Solenopsis invicta, in the case of our game) one of nature's great survivors. They have conquered waterlogged swamps just as readily as they have rain forests and back yards all over America. No wonder they're called the "imported fire ant"; they are as invasive as they are aggressive.
