Spitters/Mortals

Hi, I have noticed that spitters are actually more effective than mortals in every way? they have kinda same range and when i tried to do like 50 vs 50 lvl 1 spitters won with big reservers...same with 50 vs 50 lvl 3 and even 100 mortals vs 50 spitters, spitters killed like 60 of mortals ...is it intended or am i missing something? Do mortals need buff?

Mortars are only really effective when fighting small numerous weak enemies, preferrably at choke points.
Against everything else rapid fires are better as they can actually hit fast-moving enemies, something mortars absolutely fail at. At level 3 rapid fires even get a slow which enables them to kill pretty much everything except the most durable or numerous enemies before they can even make close combat contact.

Generally the Formica rufa unit balance is pretty terrible. The soldiers do far too little damage for their price and a group of cheap workers is almost always better to screen shooters than using actual soldiers. Regarding how the shooters' power exponentially explodes after a certain numbers large groups of rapid fires don't even need an escort at all. They just nuke everything before it can significantly damage them.

Wich one did you choose first in the formicarium ?
Me I have always got the same thing as you but reversed : in anything I try mortars beat spitters

Rapid-fire are better for being spammed at lvl 1.

Mortars are better for being built up to lvl 3 if you can utilize their splash damage.

Hello

Larva
I just tried exactly that: All mortars dead, 132 spitters survived.

Spitters are the best unit in this game, handy down.
I only build these the last 5 games.

Without soldier mortars suck. But with them they destroy, especially with splash damage. You can have a tanky frontline with 30-40 lvl 3 mortars and it will kill anything. Ive had many games where im outnumbered but the mortars manage to kill so many ants via splash that i win without too many casualties. For example in 2.2 the last wave greatly outnumbers you but if you go in your nest with frontline by the entrance and mortars back they can defeat them easy.

You can play the entire formica rufa levels with only Rapid fires. They are good, but this is a single player game (for now.) So broken is not really a concept here.

Enjoy their savagery especially when the level 3 formicarium mission.

actually thats not true...even with splash they flat out lose against spitters
You can't complete lvl 2.2 on insane without lvl 3 mortars. They each have their pros and cons. I prefer spitters because I feel they have a much greater general use against all enemies. Your tests don't show their potential because mortars and weren't designed to go head to head with anything. They were designed to sit in the backline and deal aoe damage. Run a simulation, 50 mortars (lvl3 because you never just run lvl 1 mortars) and 50 spitters (lvl3 to balance) and give them an equal number of melee ants to buffer into. Results may be different. Especially if the mortars are on defense in your base and aoeing everything walking on.

Arguably that test isn't fair. You'd need 3x rapid-fire to really get an idea of which of the two is more efficient when in their best formations.

I should also add that mortars are significantly more powerful in tight corridors, as this allows them to splash on even more enemies at a time.

My pick is definetly mortars. As mentioned, 2.2 is literally not possible on insane with mortars, and is at least much more difficult to complete on hard without mortars. Mortars can tear through any ants you throw at them as long as they have some workers on the frontline tanking, as long as they are level 3. Much better for formicarium and missions where you're against enemy ants.

But I like insane challenges so I'll be trying formicarium challenge 3 with rapid fire ants first to let you know how it goes :D
