Game stuck in Load Screen

Playing on Steamdeck. Have had the game couple of years. Have over a thousand hours in the game. Game now gets stuck on loading screen with a picture of a tiger beetle.

I have tried to get ahold of SlugDisco about this issue for several days now. Using Steam. Facebook and now the forum.

Please someone from Slug Disco respond.

Very weird bug right here, I think I've replied to you on the discord?
Perhaps mike will check the forums soon and notice this. Don't know if I can reach out to him to make the process faster for you

Thank you. Silence was frustrating.
Have deleted the game and reinstalled. SteamDeck is OS version 3.5.19
OS Build is 20240422.1
Kernal version 6.1.52-valve16-1-neptune-61
It is frustrating that out of the blue it stopped. It is more frustrating that the response from company is silence.

Our Steam Decks are playing the game just fine - has this one been modified, or have the game files been externally changed?

Apologies for the slowness on this - I'm only just seeing the Reddit post now; we're a very small team and I've been on vacation until today.

My first thought is that the display config file may have become corrupted somehow, and it isn't being properly cleaned up between installs for some reason.

The first thing that can be tried is entering developer mode on Steam Deck and clearing the Proton cache. BE WARNED - this might remove saved games (you should be able to restore them if you have Steam Cloud enabled, so make sure you have).

To do this, make sure the Deck is in Developer mode (Settings > System > System Settings > Enable Developer Mode) then you can go to EotU's Settings (gear icon) > Developer > Delete Proton Files.

You can manually back up your saves too by navigating to this folder in Desktop mode, and copy-pasting the saves somewhere else:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/463530/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/EotU/Saved/SaveGames

A more targeted and safer but more fiddly option is to just delete the engine config files, which might work by forcing the game to rebuild them. Theyre in:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/463530/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/EotU/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor

I cleared the proton cache and that didn't fix it.

The only thing I can think of that might be affecting EoTU is Pokemon Infinite Fusion, since PIF isn't a steam game. But I can't remember if EoTU broke before or after I downloaded PIF.

Perhaps that might have something to do with it - look up how to completely remove a non-Steam game; I know that the Deck won't handle all of that for you.

At this point I might try first uninstalling EotU, finding and deleting its folders entirely (again, make sure Cloud is enabled)

Everything in here: home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/463530 (including the 463530 folder itself)
And in here: home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Empires of the Undergrowth (including the EotU folder intself)

....then try reinstalling.

The nuclear option here is of course to factory reset your Steam Deck, but I understand that might not be desirable, depending on how much stuff you've got on there.

I cleared the proton cache, uninstalled the game along with Left 4 Dead 2. Just in case my mountain of L4D2 mods was messing with things. EoTU is currently reinstalling.

I don't know how to access the game files.
You can access the game files through Desktop mode. It has a file explorer browser in it which is like Windows, if you're familiar with that.
You can get to Desktop mode from the power menu.

I know about the file manager in desktop mode. But I have zero idea how to navigate it. I've looked through every folder and there's nothing.

Short of finding and deleting those files, I've had a thought - are you in the currently running optional beta or not?
