why are the first three nest workers are black ants instead of wood ants?

Wood ants are parasitic. They take over other colonies and trick the workers into feeding the Wood ant queen, and ignoring their own queen. Once the black ant queen dies she can no longer lay brood. These are surviving ants of the dead queens brood. They will die off and be replaced by wood ant workers.
