The AI ants that appear in Free-play mode make pheromone marks long after the fish is gone. I played Queen of the Hill before this, and the ants in Free-play go after uncontested food sources, much like in Queen of the Hill. Instead of removing the pheromone marks entirely, which I think could take some time, you could make the ants spawn.
