Their suggestion is that upgrading ants should allow you to provide them with bonuses individually, adding extra purpose to upgrades and making the ants powerful enough that it's worth the investment.
I'd propose a modification to this idea where every upgrade provides a "point" to the respective brood chamber, and these points can be invested into bonuses for the entire chamber (so maybe 10 or 20 points might allow you to purchase an ability, like meat wall and evasive from the formicarium).
This would arguably be a more interesting change than merely boosting the stats of upgraded ants, or limiting upgrades to be used in special cases (2.2) or in the formicarium and freeplay.
