Young, tiny hermit crabs have soft, vulnerable bodies, so they use sea shells to protect themselves. They'll use whatever shell they can find that fits them - usually a snail shell.
As cute as that sounds, the crabs are simply another food source for our ants if they can bring them down - which may be tricky because of their clever armor.
